Rectangle sunglasses are a simple style that happens to suit most people. This versatile style is both practical and fashionable, and luckily for us, with the materials now available to make sunglasses, the options out there are practically endless.  Let’s look at where it all began. 

From Round to Rectangle

Glasses began as round-shaped lenses that could easily fit into the eye socket, something similar to a monocle. They’d be perched on your nose to prevent it from falling off your face. More often they lacked temples and needed to be held up by hand. Glasses were often used by monks and the literate. 

Over time glasses became an accessory that helped with vision, regardless of whether you could read or not. By the 20th century the use of glasses and sunglasses became so widespread that it is now considered a must-have if we want to protect our eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. 

Round glasses were in vogue for a couple of decades before other shapes came about. We saw the beginnings of rectangle shaped frames post the introduction of the wayfarers.  With a predominantly square-shaped frame, the wayfarers were the stepping stone to the modern looking rectangular styles that started cropping up. 

Introduced in the 1960s, the rectangular frame began almost as a twin to the wayfarer – being slightly wider, and over time the rectangular glasses started to become more angular. With oversized styles starting to take off in popularity around this time. 

Nowadays, rectangular frames are one of the most common styles for both prescription glasses and sunglasses. They’re very versatile and can fit most face shapes and sizes.  Their versatility comes in many forms.  From the teeny tiny glasses we saw in the 90s, to the oversized face-engulfing shades that hid the wearer in the 00s, and everything in between.  And if that versatility isn’t enough, the materials used to make these glasses, along with the different lens and frame colours  available is an almost endless list of options.

Just because they are a relatively traditional and simple shape, that doesn’t mean that you can’t make a statement with a pair of rectangular frames. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
