Finding out that the pair of sunglasses you bought online doesn’t fit your face is always a bummer. All the excitement that you’ve held for days, gone. The money? Poof—gone as well.
You’re in luck if the store that you bought the shades from has return policies. But if not, it’s a complete waste of money. Unless you’re able to sell it to someone else.
For that not to happen again, we’re going to teach you a few tricks in finding the best size of sunnies that will sit perfectly and comfortably on your face.
But before we reveal these tricks, here’s a question that a lot of our shoppers are asking.
What is the standard size of sunglasses?
There’s no one size fits all when it comes to sunglasses. However, there’s what we call the standard size. And even that is not a “standard” in a traditional sense.
Allow us to elaborate.
Standard size means that the specific size of a particular type of sunglasses, let’s say aviators, is the right fit for about 90% of people that tried them out and bought them.
Take the Ray-Ban R3025 Aviators for example. This specific model comes in different sizes. But according to Ray-Ban, the 58 is their sweet spot, size-wise. Meaning, the 58 size fits almost all of their customers.
So if you think you have a regular-sized head and you’re on the hunt for a pair of Ray-Ban aviators, a size 58 might be a good place to start.
Keep in mind though that the “standard” size still varies depending on the brand and type of sunnies you’re after.
So, how do you find your size in sunglasses?
1. Use your current sunnies as a reference
This is probably the easiest way of getting the right measurements.
This technique works best if you already own a pair of sunglasses that’s already a snug fit on your face and you want to buy a new one. Or if you have a friend who owns a pair that fits your face perfectly and you want exactly the same size.
All you have to do is to find out the eye width, bridge size, and the temple length of the frame that you want to use as a reference.
Eye width – it’s the diameter of the lenses that are measured from the outermost edges of the lenses.
Bridge size – is the distance between the two lenses
Temple length – the length in millimetres of the temple, which is also called the arm piece or earpiece sometimes.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to roll out your measuring tape and measure your sunglasses manually. Just look for the right numbers that are indicated on the frame itself.
This sequence of measurements on your frame are in millimetres. And you normally find these numbers on the inner side of your temple piece.
If you can’t find them on the temple arm, look under the bridge.
Once you’ve found those temple numbers, simply shop for a pair of sunglasses with the exact measurement.
2. Know your face size
It’s not only important to find the right sunglasses for your face shape. Look for the pair that fits your face size as well.
So how do you find out your face size? Here’s where the good ol’ measuring tape or ruler will come in handy.
To know your face size, stand in front of a mirror. Then hold a ruler against your nose bridge. Adjust it so it’s lined up just below your eyes.
Lastly, measure the distance between your two temple areas in millimetres.
Once you get that number, look at the sunglasses size guide below and look for your size.
3. The Credit Card Trick
This technique is a nifty way to find your size in sunglasses. Especially if you don’t have any measuring tools readily available.
Credit cards are the perfect alternatives because their width is pretty much the same as that of a standard lens.
All you have to do is pull out your credit card then hold it vertically against the centre of your nose. Face a mirror so you can clearly see your face and the card.
A. If the edge of the credit card aligns with the outer edge of your eyes, the regular or standard size is a snug fit for you.
B. If the edge of the card extends to the far end of your eyebrows, you’re a small.
C. If the edge of the card doesn’t even reach the centre of your eyes, opt for a larger pair of sunglasses.
Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, right? Those are only some of the hacks that you can use to find your size in sunglasses.
